Winter salad leaves
A small first batch of suitable hardy leaves can make a useful autumn project. Choose varieties whose instructions match the season, rather than sowing a random summer mix.
Start modestly
Prepare a small area or clean containers, use appropriate growing medium and label the actual sowing date. Follow the packet for depth and spacing.
Keep the conditions steady
Check moisture carefully during germination. Ventilate on suitable days and prepare for cold nights. An unheated greenhouse cannot make winter behave like summer.
Harvest only when ready
Pick according to the crop and its harvest method. Leave enough healthy growth on plants intended to regrow; do not promise a harvest from a calendar date.
