SPRING / SMALL STARTS
March in an
unheated greenhouse.
Lengthening days offer opportunities, but cold nights still matter. Start a manageable number of suitable crops.
Three priorities
- Sow suitable hardy leaves according to the variety instructions.
- Start tomatoes only with suitable warmth and light for seedlings.
- Prepare supports and check pots and growing space.
Before you start
Frost remains possible. Keep tender seedlings in suitable protection.
Check which crops are actually present, their stage of growth and the instructions for their varieties. Move a job if its conditions are not met. A blank harvest record is more useful than an invented success.
A useful five-minute inspection
Look at moisture, temperature and new growth. If foliage looks damaged, inspect both sides and take a clear photograph before deciding on a treatment. Water the growing medium only when needed.
