WINTER / PROTECT & PLAN
January in an
unheated greenhouse.
Keep established leaves healthy and make a modest plan for the year. An unheated greenhouse follows the weather.
Three priorities
- Check overnight minimum temperatures and crop protection.
- Remove decaying material and inspect established leaves.
- Plan crop positions, varieties and the space each will need.
Before you start
A quiet January is normal. Check moisture before watering; cold, wet compost is not a kindness.
Check which crops are actually present, their stage of growth and the instructions for their varieties. Move a job if its conditions are not met. A blank harvest record is more useful than an invented success.
A useful five-minute inspection
Look at moisture, temperature and new growth. If foliage looks damaged, inspect both sides and take a clear photograph before deciding on a treatment. Water the growing medium only when needed.
