LATE WINTER / PREPARE
February in an
unheated greenhouse.
Prepare clean pots and a realistic sowing list. Tender crops need suitable warmth for germination and growing on.
Three priorities
- Check seed packets and prepare labels and clean pots.
- Plan warm indoor propagation if starting peppers; otherwise plan to obtain young plants later.
- Inspect winter crops and give them light and appropriate ventilation.
Before you start
An unheated greenhouse is not a heated propagator. Do not start tender crops without suitable conditions.
Check which crops are actually present, their stage of growth and the instructions for their varieties. Move a job if its conditions are not met. A blank harvest record is more useful than an invented success.
A useful five-minute inspection
Look at moisture, temperature and new growth. If foliage looks damaged, inspect both sides and take a clear photograph before deciding on a treatment. Water the growing medium only when needed.
