LATE SUMMER / THINK AHEAD

August in an
unheated greenhouse.

Enjoy established crops while preparing a little space for the next season.

Three priorities

  1. Pick suitable ripe crops and remove exhausted plants only when ready.
  2. Review winter salad and hardy spinach varieties.
  3. Prepare a small clean area for autumn sowing.

Before you start

Keep looking for heat and moisture stress. Autumn planning does not end summer care.

Check which crops are actually present, their stage of growth and the instructions for their varieties. Move a job if its conditions are not met. A blank harvest record is more useful than an invented success.

A useful five-minute inspection

Look at moisture, temperature and new growth. If foliage looks damaged, inspect both sides and take a clear photograph before deciding on a treatment. Water the growing medium only when needed.
