SPRING / WATCH THE NIGHTS
April in an
unheated greenhouse.
Young plants need room, light and steady attention. Bright days can disguise cold nights.
Three priorities
- Pot on established seedlings when their roots need room.
- Plan cucumber sowing with the variety and protected conditions in mind.
- Check temperature and ventilation; avoid premature planting of tender crops.
Before you start
The outdoor forecast and the greenhouse minimum may differ. Check both where possible.
Check which crops are actually present, their stage of growth and the instructions for their varieties. Move a job if its conditions are not met. A blank harvest record is more useful than an invented success.
A useful five-minute inspection
Look at moisture, temperature and new growth. If foliage looks damaged, inspect both sides and take a clear photograph before deciding on a treatment. Water the growing medium only when needed.
